The venue directory’s estimate, from each room’s size and how often it has music. A work in progress. How it’s worked out.

Counted through 15 October 2026: 879 live music rooms · 546 festivals, concert series and fairs · 99 recording studios · 310 music businesses, in 181 towns and 35 of Oregon’s 36 counties. Studios and businesses count those read on their own websites so far.

766 of the 879 live music rooms have an address and are on the map, with 544 of 546 festivals, concert series and fairs, 97 of 99 recording studios and 308 of 310 music businesses. Home and project studios, and businesses without a public address, sit at their town’s center, never at a home. Places close together gather into a count until you zoom in. What the federal numbers miss

The Census Bureau’s 2023 county files list 17 recording studios in Oregon with paid staff, and 620 one-person sound recording businesses that they count but never name.

This map names 99 recording studios, each read on its own website, and places 97 of them. Most of Oregon’s music economy is small businesses and self-employed people that the federal tables can’t see one by one. Counting them place by place is what this map does.

n.p.: not published. The Census file has no number for that county and industry, often because the count is small; it is not zero. A total with “at least” leaves those counties out. The independent artists line counts writers and visual artists too, not only musicians. Want this for your city or region?

This map is built from public information and checked against each source. A Recording Ecosystem Lab goes further with the people who make the music: a survey of local musicians, studios and venues, a report, and recommendations for the city or region. Most cities start with The Crisis of Perfect Music, a 60- to 90-minute session for music offices and their local recording communities.
